On Saturday, June 6 a dedication of the mosaic tile mural and artful benches at the East Donegal Township Riverfront Park was held. The 225-foot long mosaic tile mural, consisting of nearly 4,000 tiles, was designed and created by approximately 900 students at Donegal Intermediate School, with the guidance of art teacher Gina Fisichella and local artist Kevin Lehman. the mural depicts a number of scenes, each representing a facet of Lancaster County Heritage connected to the Susquehanna River. On hand for the dedication were: Kate Gonick of the Lancaster County Conservancy, Lori Yeich with the PA DCNR, Mike Domin from Lancaster County Planning, Michelle Marsh of LCSWMA, Dennis Drager Chairman of the East Donegal Township Board of Supervisors, Stephen Mohr Chairman of the Conoy Township Board of Supervisors, Beth Schwartz of Lighten Up Lancaster and Kevin Lehman.
In addition to the dedication, the connection of trail between East Donegal Township’s Riverfront Park and the Conoy Township Koser Park was recognized thanks to the completion last fall of the Schock’s Mill River Walkway. This walkway was vital to connect these two portions of the trail which now con be travelled continuously from Decatur Street in Marietta to Koser Park in Conoy Township. DM/A is proud to have partnered with LCSWMA in bringing this project to fruition. A trail ride/walk for the community was lead by Lighten Up Lancaster and Dr. Benjamin Snell, MD and Dr. Christopher Wenger, DO to promote how “user friendly” this trail is and how it can be incorporated into a healthy lifestyle.
the dedication was part of a larger National Trails Day Celebration, a program created by the American Hiking Society and first celebrated in 1993. Local sponsors of the event included: Susquehanna Riverlands/Lancaster County Conservancy, LCSWMA, the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Lighten Up Lancaster and the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail.
